It's Tulip Time!

April 2, 2009

Roger and I are about to embark on our 8th season hosting Tulip Tours. You know, we have never been fans of flat terrain but since our first trip to Holland--it has been "love at first pedal"!

And what cyclist could not love a country that respects the bike!

Until you've actually witnessed the amazing bicycle network of the Netherlands, you can't imagine this country's amazing feat of incorporating travel on two wheels into daily life.

In fact, the 15 million Dutch people own about 12 million bicycles; that's nearly as many bicycles as people, and twice as many bikes as cars! Because so many people cycle, the Netherlands has special traffic lanes, rules and road signs to improve safety for bikes.
There are over 10,000 miles of bicycle lanes, indicated by round blue signs with a white bicycle on them and in cities these lanes even have special bicycle traffic lights!

In the next three weeks we'll be exploring so many of the picturesque areas of Holland from the blooming fields and beautiful old towns of the south of Holland to the dunes and fishing villages of the famous Ijsselmeer and North Sea. Oh, and did I mention the windmills, lovely farmsteads and green expanses of beautiful polderlands!

As Spring starts to bloom here in the States, we'll be thinking of you while- "op de fiets" (on our bikes).

Hope your Tulips are colorful!
